5 proven ways to grow your email marketing list (and why you can’t wait)

Want more leads and better ROI? Discover 5 practical ways to grow your email marketing list and why starting now can future‑proof your business.

Email marketing is an important part of an overall digital marketing strategy.

Compared to social media where you’re relying on the algorithm to show content to your customers, with email marketing you know the email will hit the customers’ inbox when you push send.

Social media platforms are built on borrowed land, i.e., if something happens to the platform, your following could disappear in a flash. Having an email database (and back-ups of it) means that if all else fails, you’ll still be able to contact your customers.

Typically, your email list will be full of your most interested current or potential customers. Because of that, we often see that email marketing provides a really good return on investment (ROI.) Litmus reports the ROI on email marketing to be between 10:1 and 36:1 for most companies, that means for every $1 you spend on an email marketing campaign you can expect to see between $10 and $36 back in your pocket. You can connect Google analytics to your email marketing platform to see your own ROI.

Email marketing is a great way to keep top of your customers mind even when they aren’t actively buying your product or requiring your services. It also provides an opportunity to turn your customers into repeat customers and brand advocates.

There’s a lot more that you can do with email marketing than just a simple monthly e-newsletter. You can also set up an automated email marketing system that keeps running without you having to lift a finger. Any new subscribers that sign up through your website can automatically be entered into the database in your email marketing system and get an email or email series to say thanks for subscribing and to showcase what you do.

Many other automations are possible, the sky’s the limit. You could set up automated service reminders, birthday discounts (if you collect your subscribers’ birthdays), or abandoned cart emails designed to clinch the deal when a customer doesn’t complete a purchase.

Hopefully we’ve convinced you to add email marketing to your bag of tricks!

Here’s how to get started and watch your database grow:

1. Make it easy

Wherever people come across your brand, make sure you’re asking them to sign up to receive your newsletter. On your website you could have a form in the footer or in a pop-up. You could add a subscribe button to your e-mail signature and on your socials. Offline, having a QR code in a physical store, at a counter or a waiting area makes it fast and easy for potential subscribers to sign up while they are in store.  Make sure that your sign-up forms are optimised. Don’t ask for more info than you will actually use. The more fields in a form, the less people will fill it out. It’s a balancing act between getting the info you need and not putting people off.

2. Offer valuable content

What does your ideal customer need to know? Offering valuable content on your blog, along with a call to action (CTA) asking people to subscribe to be alerted about new blog posts gives potential subscribers a reason to sign up. You could even use a lead magnet which is a guide, checklist or template that requires an email address to access. The beauty of a lead magnet is that not only you get a new subscriber, but you can also then set up an automated email series that is designed to convert the subscriber into a client.

3. Offer a discount for signing up to newsletter

Offering a discount in return for signing up to your newsletter database is a great way to grab contact details for anyone who’s sitting on the fence about a purchase. It’s another great opportunity to use automated emails to sway them towards a purchase.

4. Collaborate

Guest blogging on another site gives you access to a whole new group of potential customers. Be sure to include a link to your e-newsletter sign-up form so you can then keep in touch with readers through your own channels.

5. Promotions/giveaways

If you are planning on running a giveaway, why not make signing up to the e-newsletter a condition of entry? Social giveaways can temporarily boost your metrics on social platforms, but the algorithm may not keep showing your posts for long. Whereas if you use the competition to build your database, you’ll be able to keep emailing your entrants in the future.
