Weaving a new identity: Rebranding the Rotorua Business Chamber

Discover how the Rotorua Business Chamber rebrand blends local identity, Te Arawa values and contemporary design to reflect connection, growth and community.

A strong brand is much more than a logo.

When the Rotorua Business Chamber approached us to refresh their identity, we knew this wasn’t simply a visual exercise. The Chamber has been supporting local businesses since 1908, bringing together business owners, advocates, leaders and entrepreneurs from across the region. The challenge wasn’t creating something new for the sake of it – it was creating something that genuinely reflected who they are and where they’re heading.

As a likewise Rotorua-based agency, that responsibility wasn’t lost on us.

Starting with story

Every successful brand begins with a story.

Before a single concept was sketched, we spent time understanding the Chamber’s role within the Rotorua business community. Through workshops, conversations and research, several themes emerged repeatedly: connection, collaboration, advocacy, support and growth.

At the same time, it was important that the identity felt authentically grounded in Rotorua. We didn’t want to create something generic that could belong to any chamber of commerce in New Zealand. This needed to feel connected to place, people and community.

That thinking led us to explore concepts inspired by Te Arawa values and visual traditions, particularly the idea of raranga (weaving) and kotahitanga (unity and togetherness).

The power of a meaningful symbol

The final tohu was inspired by weaving.

More specifically, it represents the interconnection of people, businesses, ideas and opportunities that come together through the Chamber. Every business is unique, but collectively they form something stronger.

The geometric woven form also draws subtle inspiration from the shelter and gathering spaces of the marae, places where people come together, support one another and share knowledge.

What we love about the final mark is that it works on multiple levels. At first glance it’s a strong, contemporary symbol. But beneath that sits a story that reflects the Chamber’s purpose and values.

That’s where branding becomes powerful. The logo isn’t simply decorative – it becomes a visual expression of what an organisation stands for.

Balancing culture and contemporary design

An important part of the project was ensuring the identity felt respectful and authentic, with a contemporary, professional presence.

The result is a clean, confident brand system that works equally well across business reports, digital campaigns, events, signage and social media.

The custom headline typeface, colour palette and supporting graphic elements were all developed to support the story of connection and weaving without overwhelming it.

Every element has a role to play.

Building more than a logo

One of the biggest misconceptions about branding is that it ends once the logo is approved.

In reality, that’s only the beginning.

For the Chamber, we developed a complete visual identity system including colour palettes, typography, iconography, patterns, social media templates, digital assets and brand guidelines. These tools ensure the organisation can communicate consistently while still having flexibility to adapt for different audiences and channels.

A successful brand needs to work everywhere, from a Facebook profile image to a major event banner because consistency builds recognition – and recognition builds trust.

Why local matters

Working with local organisations is always rewarding, but this project carried particular significance for our team.

Rotorua’s business community is entrepreneurial, resilient and deeply connected. Many of the businesses represented by the Chamber are businesses we know, work alongside and support through our work. That local understanding helped shape the project from beginning to end.

What our client thought

“Working with Redspot Creative Studio continues to be an outstanding experience. Their team takes the time to understand our organisation, our goals, and the story we want to tell, and the new brand they created for the Rotorua Business Chamber truly reflects who we are.

From strategy through to design, every step is handled with professionalism, creativity, and attention to detail. They are collaborative, responsive, and consistently bring fresh ideas while ensuring the final result aligns with our vision.”

– Aly Bennett, Events and Marketing Manager, Rotorua Business Chamber

Looking forward

The Rotorua Business Chamber has a proud history, but this project was ultimately about the future.

The new identity provides a platform for the Chamber to continue advocating for business, strengthening connections and supporting growth across the region for years to come.

For us as designers, that’s always the goal.

A great brand should be visually distinctive, strategically grounded and built around a story people can believe in. When those elements come together, a brand becomes something people want to be part of.

We’re incredibly proud to have partnered with the Rotorua Business Chamber on this journey and look forward to seeing the identity grow alongside the community it represents. Watch this space as we create a number of sub-brands next for the Chamber’s regular offerings such as Business After 5, Women In Business, and more.
